Roy E. Johnston Jr., 89, of Oelwein, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at his home.

Visitation was Thursday, April 14, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.

Funeral services were Friday, April 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, conducted by Rev. Paul C. McManus and Deacon Jim Patera.

Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein with military honors by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 honor guard of Oelwein.

Roy Edgar Johnston Jr. was born March 19, 1927, at Duncans Bridge, Mo., the son of Roy E. and Jennie (Hamilton) Johnston Sr. Roy proudly served in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. For many years he was employed as a foreman at Fisher Governor Company in Marshalltown. On July 18, 1998, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice (Kash) Trimble at Oelwein. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks and the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9. Roy enjoyed race car driving, fishing, boating and most of all spending time at Guttenberg on the Mississippi.

Roy is survived by his two children, Mary Lawrence of Cedar Falls and Jeff (Dawn) Johnston of Marshalltown; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife on Feb. 27, 2009; son, Rick Grant; brother, Chet Johnston; and four nephews.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.
