New County Building
County to get new
salt, sand storage building
By Ted Pennekamp
The Crawford County Highway Department will be getting a new $800,000 building for the storage of salt and sand. Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock said that such a building has been in the works for about 10 years, and this summer it will be built from Wisconsin Department of Transportation as well as federal funds as part of the $17 million Highway 18 project in the town of Bridgeport.
The old salt and sand building has been torn down because it was in disrepair and in need of replacement. The new building will be constructed in the same location in the 400 block of North Ohio Street near Design Building Materials and near the intersection of North Ohio and Washington streets.
Pelock said that the new building will be able to hold 5,000 tons, of which 3,000 tons will be salt and 2,000 tons will be a salt and sand mixture. The building will have 12-foot-high concrete walls and a high, metal roof similar in shape to that of many barns.
