 Herman Wachter, 91, of Woodman, died on Monday evening Jan. 11, at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Society. 

Herman was born on June 2, 1924 in Midland, S. D. to Herman and Mertie (Kaiser) Wachter. He married Bernadine Freymiller on Oct. 20, 1946 in Prairie du Chien. 

Herman grew up in Midland, before moving to the Millville area at the age of 14. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944-1946. Upon returning home from the Air Corps, Herman and Bernadine began farming in Marion Township. Herman could do anything around the farm and was also an expert at falling trees and working in the woods. In addition to his farm work, Herman did custom combining and operated bulldozer for Adolf Ketterer for many years. Herman was a past member of the Marion Township Board, Fennimore Fire Board, Werley School Board, Mt. Hope American Legion and Marion Church Council and Brotherhood. He and Bernadine enjoyed traveling to such places as California, Canada, Branson and Nashville. He also enjoyed playing cards, hunting, dancing and playing the harmonica. Herman was a dedicated and hard working man who enjoyed the simple things in life and was always willing to lend a helping hand. 

Herman is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Bernadine Wachter of Woodman; daughter Connie (Oscar) Peterson of Woodman; grandchildren, Corbet Peterson of Chippewa Falls, Carissa Miller of Wisconsin Dells, and Paula (Andrew) Novak of Waupun; great-grandchildren Samuel and Christopher Peterson and Christa Novak; step-great-grandson Noah Olp; brother Louis Wachter of Woodman; sisters Hazel Ellis of Glenn Haven, and Dorice VanVorst of St. Paul, Minn., and sister-in-law Doris Ann Wachter of Fennimore. 

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert, Harold, Clifford, Donald, Edward, Kenneth, Russell and Carl Wachter; and sisters Cleone Eckert, Florence Wachter and Ina England. 

In respect of the family’s wishes, a private funeral service will be held. Burial with military honors will be held in the Prairie Cemetery in Fennimore. The Larson Family Funeral Home of Fennimore is assisting the family and online condolences may be made at larsonfuneralhomes.com.
