Arnie McCullick, 81, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Steuben, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 8, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Crawford County, on Oct. 30, 1934 to Gerald and Bertha McCullick. He was raised on farms on Haney Ridge and in Seneca Township. He married Carmen Powers in 1955; four children were born to this union. They divorced in 1986.

Arnie later found a forever friend, Evelyn Crowley, whom he spent the rest of his life with. Evelyn brought seven children to the relationship, and later several grandchildren, who also shared Arnie’s life.

Arnie spent most of his young life farming, but shortly after getting married and starting a family, he moved to Rockford, Ill. to try and better provide for his family. He worked two and three jobs at a time, doing whatever it took to make a living. He worked for Greenlee Bros. for more than 20 years where he became a foreman. When the plant closed down, he moved back to his homeland of Crawford County and worked for Amon & Sons where he drove dump truck for many years. After retiring, he and Evelyn went on an extended road trip. They took a trip north to Alaska, driving his fifth-wheel truck and pulling a camper. He had always dreamed of driving the Alkan Highway. He said he remembered studying it as it was being built. He learned about it in grade school in the “Weekly Reader.” He also has a sister in Alaska, who they wanted to visit, and another sister in North Dakota, who they stopped to see along the way.

Arnie enjoyed the outdoors, boating and camping on the Mississippi River, vacations at Castle Rock Lake, and trips up north fishing or out west hunting. He was also an avid mushroom hunter. Most of all, he loved spending time with friends and family whom he was so proud of. Arnie was also an engineer in his own right. He could fix or design anything he put his mind to, mostly mechanical in nature.

Arnie will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his storytelling. He never forgot a punchline, and every story led to another.

Arnie is survived by his children, Cathy (Ron) Peek, Rockford, Ill., Dick (Kim) McCullick, Don McCullick (Tara), Prairie du Chien, Lynn (Mark) Withey, Eastman; twleve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters Delores (John) Parker Kodiak, Alaska, Rosie (Roger) Johnson, Nome, N.D. forever friend, Evelyn Crowley (children and grandchildren);  very special aunt, Juanita Smith, and several special nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his faithful dog, Scout.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home, 104 Fremont St. Boscobel, WI 53805, with Pastor Lynn Schreck officiating. Inurnment will be at the Haney Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 15, from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
