PdC-WS wrestlers at Bi-State Classic

Beers places seventh, Garcia is twelfth

On Tuesday, Dec. 29 and Wednesday, Dec. 30, the Prairie du Chien grapplers traveled to La Crosse for the 34th Annual Bi-State Classic hosted by Holmen High School at the La Crosse Center. This event puts 58 teams from all divisions together with more than 600 wrestlers from throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Bi-State Classic is one of the toughest holiday tournaments in the midwest. There were 79 wrestlers in the event who competed in the Wisconsin or Minnesota State Tournaments last year; 31 of them were medalists and 8 of them were state champions.

As a team, PdC finished in 38th place with 98.5 points. Leading the way for the Blackhawks were Clayton Beers (126#) with a seventh place finish and Blake Garcia (113#) with a 12th place finish. Beers opened the tournament with three pins. Clayton pinned Huckstorf from Muskego, Bemis from Tomah, and Moukrim from Eastview. In the quarterfinals, Beers was defeated 8-4 by defending State Champion Stuhl from Ellsworth. Beers would bounce back on the consolation side with a major decision over Dach from Viroqua before falling to Worachek from Luxemburg-Casco 4-1. In the seventh-place match, Beers won by major decision over Hendren from Lakeville South 10-0.

Garcia opened the tournament with a first round forfeit, followed by a 4-0 decision over O’Reilly from Goodhue. Garcia would then be defeated by Frakes from Mount Horeb before bouncing back with a pin over Hess from West Salem/Bangor and a 7-5 decision over Leer from Viroqua. Garcia would then be defeated by Ronsman from Luxemburg-Casco and Radtke from River Valley. Garcia medical forfeited the 11th-place match to Weiler from Burlington. Reid Koenig (106#), Stephen Ronnfeldt (182#), and Peyton Hall (195#) also advanced to the round of 16, each coming up just one match short of placing.

PdC will host Viroqua in a nonconference dual on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Richland Center on Thursday, Jan. 7 for a conference dual at 7 p.m.
