Lawrence F. Novey, 92, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, at Crossing Rivers Health.

He was born in Prairie du Chien on Oct. 21, 1923 to Albert and Anna (Bouzek) Novey. On Jan. 5, 1952 he was united in marriage with Joan Bock.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1943 and served as a member of the 75th Battalion and the 137th Construction Battalion (SeaBees) until being honorably discharged in April 1946. After his military service, he worked in the sheet metal, heating, air conditioning, and roofing business in Prairie du Chien, where he owned and operated the Prairie du Chien Heating and Roofing Company from 1949 until his retirement in 1993. He was a skilled artisan and his work can still be seen around Prairie du Chien today, including the cross atop the steeple of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Throughout his life Lawrence enjoyed spending time with his family, whom he considered his greatest accomplishment, taking family vacations, including trips to Branson, Mo., gardening, making wine, and working on wood and metal projects. He was also an  avid reader of news magazines, woodworking journals, and history publications. In May of this year he was honored to have been chosen to participate in a Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan; his children, Kathleen Novey of Prairie du Chien, and David (Karla) Novey, of Byron, Minn.; and three grandchildren, Zachary (Rebecca) Novey of New Ulm, Minn., Justin Novey, and Brandon Novey, both of Byron, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Henry, Adolph, Leo, George, and Albert, all of Prairie du Chien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.  Friends may call at the Garrity Funeral Home, 704 South Ohio Street, in Prairie du Chien from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, where there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m.
