Irene Mezera, 93, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, Oct. 23, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa surrounded by her family. 

She was born June 25, 1922 in Nottingham, England the daughter of James and Elsie (Hopewell) Whysall. She married Frank Mezera on May 21, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Church in Nottingham. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 2004. Irene worked at Campion Jesuit High School and the Ben Franklin Store in Prairie du Chien. She also worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Mezera Heating and Air Conditioning. Irene enjoyed playing cards and games with her grandchildren, especially scrabble. She loved corresponding and traveling back to see her family in England. 

She is survived by her daughters, Arlene (Lawrence) Long of Prairie du Chien, Janice (Michael) O’Malley of Lake Villa, Ill.; her sons, Robert (Chang Sun) of Fayetteville, N.C., John (Kate) of Joliet, Ill. and Mike (Kayla) of Prairie du Chien; her brothers, James Edwin and Peter Whysall; her sister Kathleen Witby all of Nottingham, England; her grandchildren Nathan, Kelsey, Craig, Cara, Devin, Jillian, Nick, David, Tony, Ryan, Laurie, Kristine and Steven; seventeen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother Oliver and a sister Audrey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Monday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a wake scripture at 6:30 p.m.
