Wawro discusses the elementary TAG program with Emily Welper.

While visiting area schools, Wawro said she was especially interested to learn more about reading literacy. She spoke candidly with Roberta Hass, Kathy Koether and Title 1 teacher Sherri Kerr about the impact legislation has on it.

In Hass’ second grade room, Wawro asked the kids about their favorite books and why being a teacher is a good job. She also told them that what they learn in school today, particularly reading, will aid them in their future careers and as parents.

Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) President Tammy Wawro visited MFL MarMac Monday afternoon as part of a tour of northeast Iowa school districts.

An educator from Cedar Rapids, Wawro has served as the ISEA President since April 2012.

“It’s nice to see things firsthand,” she said, noting that touring regions of the state is a good way to gain information.

Accompanied by MFL MarMac elementary teacher Roberta Hass, principal Kathy Koether and Northeast Iowa Education Unit Director Kevin McDermott, Wawro toured the school buildings in Monona, speaking with various staff members.

With superintendent Dale Crozier, she discussed MFL MarMac’s participation in the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System and his shared position with Eastern Allamakee. She also asked what the district’s biggest challenge is, which he noted was enrollment.

Wawro also spoke with students. In one kindergarten room, students shared about “filling people’s buckets” by saying nice things. In Hass’ second grade room, Wawro asked the kids about their favorite books and why being a teacher is a good job. She also told them that what they learn in school today, particularly reading, will aid them in their future careers and as parents.

While visiting area schools, Wawro said she was especially interested to learn more about reading literacy. She spoke candidly with Hass, Koether and Title 1 teacher Sherri Kerr about the impact legislation has on it.

“I want to learn how schools are doing with state standards,” she explained. “I find that they are taking a lot of tests.”

When ISEA develops policies and programs, Wawro said, “We try to keep the students at the center of the conversation. If it’s good for students and schools, it’s good for the community.”
