James (Jim) E. Boylen, 82, of Seneca passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, surrounded by family and loved ones.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1933, to Lawrence and Irma (Nachreiner) Boylen in Eastman. He graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1951 and enlisted in the Army, receiving the National Defense Service medal. On Feb. 16, 1957, Jim was united in marriage to Ica Severson in Eastman. Together they raised four children while farming outside of Seneca, for more than 20 years. Jim believed in his community! He drove school bus in the Seneca School District for 33 years and was an active member of the Seneca Lion’s Club, Seneca Community Club and St. Patrick’s Parish. Together, he and Ica also ran the Seneca little league program for almost 30 years. Jim also found time to pursue his many other passions, including hunting with his dogs, driving his horse team, playing softball with the Seneca Farmers, competing with his John Deer tractor in the Seneca Days tractor pull, supporting his grandchildren at their numerous events. If there was spare time, he loved to read his favorite author Louis L’Amour. The most important thing in life to Jim was his family.

He’s survived by his wife of 58 years, Ica; four children Lynn (Bob) Stevenson, Debbie (Randy) Varo, David (Ann) Boylen and Brenda (Brian) Kramer; eleven grandchildren Shawn (Heidi) Stevenson, Kelly (Joe) Leschisin, Wade (Hannah) Varo, Grant (Jennifer) Varo, Dylan Varo (Tori), Travis Boylen (Kelli), Troy Boylen (Rachel), Jessica Boylen, Ashley (Nick) Jones, April (Jeremy) Droeszler and Abby Kramer (Christopher); thirteen great-grandchildren Aydan, Paige, Kael, Claire, Ella, Grace, Brynly, Emily, Violet, Will, Ava, Brooke and Becca; six siblings Patricia (Robert) Hazen, Mary White, Dianne (Todd) Caya, Larry (Sharon) Boylen and Rick (Marcia) Boylen; sister-in-law Anita (Greg) Rickleff; and many nephews, nieces and treasured friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter Barbara Ann; sister Kate Trehey; brother-in-laws Donald Severson, Ed White and John Trehey; and daughter-in-law Nancy (Webster) Boylen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca, Reverends Zacharie Beya and Victor Feltes concelebrating, with burial in the church cemetery. Military honors will be accorded graveside by the Wisconsin Dept. of Veterans Affairs.  Friends may call on Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a wake scripture at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be distributed by the family to some of Jim’s favorite charities.
