As hammers and nails build up walls, St. Gabriel’s Catholic School remains in the process of getting a new gym. The idea for a new gymnasium was introduced 12 to 13 years ago, according to St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church Father James C. Weighner, before he arrived in Prairie du Chien. The administration continued to talk about additions and a new gym until funding and timing made the project a reality.

“The new, full-size gymnasium will have a daycare and office center attached to it,” said Weighner. “It will have seating for about 100 to 150 people.”

Ground was broken in April of this year, but the construction has gone a little bit longer than expected and has no official end date yet.

“Right now, we will continue with construction through fall until they are finished,” Weighner said. “All the activities we have offered in the past will be offered again this year in one location or another, like [Bluffview] or Hoffman Hall.”

Along with the new gymnasium and other additions to the school, the playground will be relocated to where the old gym stood.

“[The playground] was built nine years ago in remembrance of Austin and Justin,” said Carrie Nolan, mother of the two boys who passed away in an ATV accident in 2005. “We are not sure when it will be put up again; it depends when the gym gets finished.”

Nolan was hoping the playground would have been up for the 10-year anniversary of the boys’ deaths on Aug. 23, or as their mother calls it, their “angel-versary.”

“We hope to get it up sometime soon so the school kids can play on it during the school year,” she added. “When we can put the playground back up depends on the gym project.”
