The date for the grand opening of the Seneca area Veterans Memorial is set for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The memorial site is on Highway 27/Main St. in Seneca, directly across from Greener’s Corner, and work is being done weekly to have it completed before the opening date.

Names to be inscribed on the wall need to be submitted to the monument company by the Memorial Committee no later than Aug. 31. Names received by the end of August will be inscribed with no charge to the submitter. As of Sept. 1, there will be a charge for inscription. Dates of service are needed to ensure the names go on the correct wall.

If a person is serving now or has served in any of the armed forces—no matter in peacetime or conflict—and if that person lives or ever lived in the Seneca area, or went to Seneca Schools, his/her name should be on that wall. If anyone fits these descriptions—alive or deceased—please get that information to the Seneca Area Veterans Memorial Committee before Aug. 31.

Pick up and fill out a brochure at the memorial site or at some Seneca businesses, or contact Carol Crusan at (608) 412-3184 or at carolcrusan@gmail.com or Bob at (608) 874-4900. The committee does not want to leave anyone out.

What does “Seneca Area” mean? It is a slightly expanded version of the old Seneca School District. Roughly, it is Highway D on the south; to Rising Sun on the north; the Mississippi River on the west and an indefinite line on the east. If a veteran attended Seneca Schools, they are eligible, no matter where they live. The committee wants to be able to honor all of the Seneca area military, so they ask readers to put on their memory caps and talk to friends and relatives near and far to help include everyone who should be remembered.
