John William Welterlen, 91, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born on January 8, 1924, the son of Arthur and Esther (Rosberg) Welterlen. John graduated from Edgewood High School. 

John served honorably in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a US Navy Bombardier in the Caribbean (Guantanamo Bay) and the South Pacific (Saipan, Okinawa, China coast).

Upon his return from service he attended Iowa State College. It was there that John met Jane Nieman, and they were married June 1, 1947. 

John operated A. Welterlen & Son, farm implement dealer for 24 years, until it burned in 1970. He was a dairy farmer on the “Double J” farm for 20 years. He simultaneously ran dealerships for J&D Equipment for 15 years, Poly Dome products for 18 years, and Moorman feeds. He drove school bus for 13 years, was a substitute teacher for Life Science/Biology, taught farming principles to Vietnam Veterans, and gave tractor safety instruction to 12-year-olds. 

John was an active leader in the community, with membership in the Trinity Methodist Church in Edgewood, and also the Edgewood Bible Church. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Pythias Lodge, Avalon Masonic Lodge, Grange Club, Edgewood Commercial Club and Chamber of Commerce. John volunteered for the NE Iowa Antique Association, Backbone Lake Friends, and Bixby Park. He was a exhibitor for Delaware, Clayton and Dubuque County Fairs. He enjoyed portraying Santa Claus (for 40 years), and volunteering for Edgewood Rodeo Days.  

Survivors include his four children; Jan (Rich) Pingel and their 2 children Anna and Thadd, Pamela (Dennis) Collins and her 3 children Jacki, Ned and Kandi, Ross (Maureen) and their four children Tessa, Maddie, Jake and Raine, and Tracy (Brandi) and their two children Lucy and Max, plus nine great-grandchildren.  

John was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Jane, brother Jim, his sister Betty (Springer) and great-grandson Kai. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood, Iowa, with Pastor Mike Jackson officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Friday, June 12 at the Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood, Iowa. In addition, there will be a one-hour visitation before the service at the church on Saturday. 

Interment with military rites will be at the Edgewood Cemetery, with a fellowship luncheon at the church following. Online condolences may be sent through www.leonard-mullerfh.com.
