Mary Jo Cody, 16, the daughter of Bryan and Martha Cody, rural Seneca, was named Crawford County Dairy Princess, Sunday, May 31, at Eastman UMC Fellowship Hall.

About 100 people came out for the Crawford County Dairy Kick-Off Banquet, where Cody was crowned. She will serve as Crawford County’s 59th Dairy Princess.

The Cody family owns and operates a 450-acre dairy farm with a 35-cow herd. Mary will be a junior at North Crawford High School this fall and plans to pursue a veterinary degree at UW-River Falls. She is excited about her princess title and the responsibilities it entails.

Unlike many of her fellow princess candidates, Cody lives and works on her family’s dairy farm daily. With no hired help, Cody and her brother, Matt, tend the calves, milk the cattle and complete tractor work.

Considering she sees the day-to-day troubles, demands and beauties of the dairy industry, Cody feels she is the perfect candidate for the job.

Cody wrote about the misconceptions of the dairy industry in her speech prior to being named Crawford County Dairy Princess.

“There are people who don’t know about the dairy industry; I want to change that,” said Cody.

With the intentions to share the truth about the industry, Cody looks forward to growing in the next year with the title of dairy princess.

“The misconceptions really hurt the dairy industry. By speaking to the community and advertising, we can hopefully change that,” said Cody.

Living on a dairy farm has taught Cody a lot of values on life, work ethic and morals. Cody also explained living on a dairy farm has taught her and her brother “there are no options to give up, things must get done.”
Even though her work load may double for the summer, Cody is very excited to be out of school and to get some relaxation time. She is thankful for the opportunity to attend all the summer events, like parades and the Crawford County Dairy Breakfast Saturday, June 13, as the Crawford County Dairy Princess.

“I get to talk to the community and represent the dairy industry in the county, which is important to the economy,” said Cody.

Serving as Crawford County Dairy Princess Attendant this summer will be Amari McCarthy. She is the 15-year-old daughter of Joni McCarthy, of Wauzeka. She is a member of the Crazy Clover 4-H Club, Jr. Holsteins, Crawford County State Fair Dairy Team, and Jr. Legion. At Wauzeka-Steuben High School, she is active in FFA, cheerleading, volleyball and softball. McCarthy has shown dairy cattle for 11 years and served as the 2008 Little Miss Squirt.

In addition, Lindsey Nolan will serve as the 2015 Crawford County Little Miss Squirt. She is a 9-year-old third grader at Prairie Catholic School. Her parents, Patrick and Tammy Nolan, farm together with Pat’s brother, John, in rural Prairie du Chien, where they milk 175 Holstein cows. On the farm, Nolan likes to help feed the calves and chickens and give extra attention to the kittens and lambs. She is a member of the Eastman Cloverleaf 4-H Club, little league girls’ softball, and girls running club.

The newly crowned dairy royalty’s first public appearance will be greeting guests Saturday, June 13 at the Crawford County Dairy Breakfast, hosted by the Chad, Amy, Grant, and Sarah Jelinek Family Farm, located a half-mile south of Seneca on Highway 27.
