Lt. Col. Leroy E. (Roy) Bunders (USA-Ret)
Lt. Col. Leroy E. (Roy) Bunders (USA-Ret) of Poquoson, Va. died May 1, at the VA Hospital in Hampton, Va.
Roy was born Jan. 26, 1931 in Wauzeka to Louise (Schneider) Bunders and Charles Bunders.
Roy was a graduate of Prairie du Chien High School. He enlisted in the Army on Nov. 1, 1948 and while serving in the Korean War, was awarded a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant. He earned many medals and citations during his years of military service.
After retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, Roy worked in the real estate business in Poquoson. He was also very active in the community. He started over 50 Exchange Clubs from Washington D.C. to the North Caroline coast.
Roy is survived by many nieces and nephews and a step-daughter. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Hartless Bunders who died Jan. 23, 2015; his parents; a step-son Charles Thacker; his sisters Dolores (Dee) Lechner, Tena Messerli, Marion Chukna, Olive Johnston and his brother Bud Bunders.
A memorial service was held in Hampton, Va on May 14 and a memorial service will be held in Prairie du Chien in the future.
Roy and Nancy were cremated and will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
