At its April 20 meeting, the Monona City Council awarded the construction contract for the Murphy Helwig Library addition and renovation project to Brenton Buildings, LLC, of Monona, with a bid of $704,481. This is below the estimated cost of $715,997. The project will be completed this year.

Dollar General

The city countered Dollar General’s offer for a city lot along Highway 18, next to the car wash. Dollar General offered $20,000 for the lot along with $10,000 down in earnest money. The city agreed to $20,000 for the lot with a re-worked boundary as well as the $10,000 in earnest money, which will not go toward the purchase but held in trust until the project’s completion. In the counter-offer, the city also asked Dollar General to pay for the 100-foot extension of Davis Street, including sewer. If the city were to complete the work, it would cost $71,000 said mayor Barb Collins, and the city would have to borrow that money. The city also expects the company to pay for fill work on the property. Dollar General will not be eligible for tax abatement.

The company can now accept or counter the offer. It could also choose not to move forward with the planned store if something is found unsatisfactory with the property.

Police report

Police chief Jo Amsden warned community members that $20 counterfeit bills have been passed around the area, particularly in Waukon, lately.

“If you get any that feel different or look different, notify us,” she said.

Amsden also reminded citizens to keep their vehicles and homes locked to deter thefts as the weathers gets warmer. If anyone sees suspicious activity, let the police department know, she added.
