The Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department Drama Club—Drama Hawks Junior—will perform a family friendly play, “The Snow Queen,” on Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m., in the Prairie du Chien High School Theater.

This adaptation of “The Snow Queen,” written by Lynn Brittney, is based on the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The story, according to Director Luana Stiemke, is that of a sun queen who becomes cold and gets a piece of an evil spirit’s mirror in her heart, freezing her heart like a block of ice. There’s a foretelling that a child can help bring her back to her old self again, so she begins looking for a child who can do just that and also put her mirror back together. When one of two siblings, Kai, is taken by the snow queen, his sister Gerda tries to rescue him, going through her share of trials along the way. Overall, the story centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and Kai.

Narrators of “The Snow Queen” are the snow spirits. There are also reindeer, talking flowers, robbers and a sorceress in the play.

“It’s really a good one for the kids to try multiple parts and experience a variety of different things,” Stiemke said.

This year’s spring performance is the first by the drama club that will feature singing by the young performers. The show is about one hour long and is appropriate for people of all ages.

“This is very geared toward children. There’s nothing scary about it,” Stiemke noted. “It’s one for the whole family.”

The young, local actors and actresses appearing “The Snow Queen” have been practicing twice a week since Jan. 12. Most come from the Prairie du Chien area and are between the ages of 6 and 13.

“We’ve got so many kids who’ve come back for their fifth and sixth years,” Stiemke said. “This group really likes to perform.”

On stage will be Abigail Galbraith, Ellie Mara, Katy Welsch, Grace Pedretti, Allyson Schroeder, Sophia Valley, Emma Anthony, Jillian Kruempel, Avary Shefland, Marshall Brookins, David Riniker, Ansley Shefland, Alexis Meran, Lillian Shedivy, Makenzie Gates, Emmerson Schroeder, Olivia Fox and Orion Day.

The public is invited to take in this one-time show. Admission is free, though freewill donations will be accepted. Proceeds will go toward the Hoffman Hall Improvement Fund.

Following “The Snow Queen,” the Drama Club will turn its attention to summer programming. Parents and kids interested in participating are encouraged to check out the dates in the spring/summer activity guide put out by the parks and recreation department. This summer will be the ninth year of the program.
