Anita M. Lechnir, 79, of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Prairie Maison Care Center in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born May 5, 1935 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Rhodell and Hazel (O’Connell) Klema. She married John Lechnir on Sept. 18, 1958 at Sacred Heart Church in Wauzeka. Together they farmed in rural Prairie du Chien for many years. He preceded her in death on May 20, 2000. Anita taught elementary school on Wall Ridge and later worked in nutrition services for the Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien for 27 years until her retirement. She was an active member of St. John’s Parish in Prairie du Chien. Family and friends always came first, Anita was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a great cook and took pride in her home and gardens. 

She is survived by her children, Yvonne (Neil) Gillitzer and Peggy (Scott) Sklenar both of Prairie du Chien, Mary Anne Staniszewski of Wisconsin Dells, Stephen (Lisa) of Las Vegas, Nev., Joseph (Bonnie) of Valley Center, Calif., Nicholas (Susan) of LaCrescent, Minn., Michael (LeeAnn) of Tipp City, Ohio and John (Debra) of Holmen; her sisters, Patricia Mezera and twin sister Rita (Bill) Hamann both of Prairie du Chien and Marjorie Harpold of Billings, Mont.; twenty grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother Michael Klema.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Eastman. Friends may call on Monday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a family rosary at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
