Since December 10, a 40 member Facility Committee has been meeting regularly to see what the Central Community School K-12 building needs to update it’s facilities.  The committee is made up of parents, residents with no children in school, business leaders, teachers, associates, students, and administrators.

Central Superintendent and Elementary Principal Nick Trenkamp put the committee together.  “We wanted to include a variety of people to help with this process,” he said.  “The committee thinks that it is time to bring the school up to date.  We should know a lot more about a possible project by the end of March”

The Facility Committee will meet again in February.  A bonding agency will present information concerning financing the project to the school board at a February 23 work session.  After that, a public hearing concerning the project will be held in March to get residents’ input.  After the public hearing, another Facility Committee will be scheduled to discuss the public input and possibly make changes to the project based on public comments.  At the school board’s March meeting, an architect will project cost numbers and present drawings based on what the committee’s final decision is for project goals.

“We will know more about what the costs will be by then,” Trenkamp said.  “It will definitely be a multi-million dollar project.”  “If the school board approves the project a bonding campaign will begin in April, with voters deciding on a bonding measure in June.”

The facilities committee would like to see any approved project address the following concerns; handicap accessibility, school security, energy efficiency, flow of the building, and adding 21st Century learning spaces.  The facility committee would also like to see some site improvements which include handicap accessibility to the playground at Molumby Field and handicap parking and accessible entrances.

“We have also discussed using more solar energy, updating the shop area and restructuring some rooms,” Trenkamp said. “Moving the Media Center, creating a commons area for school events and updating security for the school is also on the list.”
