Mel Peter "Pete" Steele


Mel Peter “Pete”Steele, 74, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, June 11, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, after a brief illness. 

He was born Jan. 7, 1940 in Waukon, Iowa the son of Burnill and Lois (Stubstad) Steele. He married Sally Stewart on Feb. 3, 1962 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Pete began working at Burgess Cellulose which would later become 3M Company in Prairie du Chien. He held several positions with 3M but spent most of his career as human resources manager, retiring in 1993. Pete later received his riverboat captain’s license and worked from the Cassville Ferry and the Miss Marquette. He also later established his own river tour, Blue Heron Tours. Pete was active in the community serving as past president of the Jaycees, Prairie du Chien city alderman and a volunteer for the American Red Cross. His loves were his family and friends, fishing, music and spending winters in Florida. 

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Sally Steele of Prairie du Chien; his children Elizabeth (Michael) Hoffman of Minnetonka, Minn., Mark Steele of Bloomington, Minn.; his brothers, Clem (Jane) of Dubuque, Iowa, Bill (Marian) of Madison, Richard (Sheila) of Onalaska, Michael (Jo) of Hudson, Vincent (Sandy) of La Crosse, and Dennis (Sharon) of Prairie du Chien; his sister Mary (Gene) Kirschbaum of Prairie du Chien; his grandchildren Nick, Rick, Tom and John. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 14, at 3 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien with Steve Steele officiating. A private family inurnment will be at a later date. 

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, June 14, from 2 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
