Duane A. Gage
Duane A. "Shorty" Gage, 86, of Guttenberg, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.
Visitation was one hour before services at the funeral home.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 29, at the Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader.
Inurnment was at the East Side Cemetery, Elkader. Military Rites were conducted by the Lemka-Stendel American Legion Post #106.
Duane Andrew, the son of McKinley and Martha (Malary) Gage, was born Jan. 17, 1928, in Illyria Township, Fayette County, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Wadena, until he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. Duane was united in marriage with Dorothy Thomas Shippy of Wadena. Dorothy was a widow and brought six stepchildren to this union: Lorraine (Art) Livingston, Gloria (Chuck) DeCook, Sharon (Skip) Crawford, Donny (Sandra) Shippy, Gary (Carol) Shippy and Kenny (Sonya) Shippy. In 1956, Duane and Dorothy had a daughter, Ginger. Dorothy passed away Dec. 25, 1958.
Duane spent many years working various jobs in the area and moved to Elkader, where he met Dorothy Schrunk Rodenberg. They were united in marriage in 1965. Dorothy’s three children joined the family, Jack Rodenberg, Sheila Ihde and Rodney Rodenberg. Duane started working for the Iowa D.O.T., and spent many winters plowing snow. He retired after twenty dedicated years of service. After retirement, Duane and Dorothy moved to Guttenberg. Dorothy passed away in 2005.
Duane struggled with congenital heart failure and several other health problems for many years. He gave a good fight before he passed away at the Guttenberg Care Center. “Shorty” was that guy who would see the need and help anyone he met. We will all miss you!
He leaves behind his daughter, Ginger (Bob) Kruse of Elkport; stepchildren, Sheila Ihde of Garnavillo and Rodney Rodenberg of Guttenberg; his grandchildren, Shawn (Jolene) Kruse of Lansing, and Kerra Kruse of Elkport; his great-grandchildren, Austin and Carter Kruse; his step-grandchildren, Nena Deoliveia, Angie Rodenberg, Tina Mclaskey, Chad Ihde, William Rodenberg, Toni Walker, Tammy Large and David Rodenberg; two brothers, Ed (Virginia) Gage of Wadena and Keith (Waneta) Gage of Oelwein; two sisters, Mary Reed of Oelwein and Maxine (Bob) Klaes of Guttenberg; and three sisters-in-law, Lois Gage of Colorado, Louise Ludovissy of Guttenberg, and Hattie Appleton of Guttenberg.
Duane was preceded in death by his two wives; his parents; his stepson, Jack Rodenberg; his siblings, John Gage, Marjorie Voshell, and James Gage; sisters-in-law, Etta Gage and Berdina Smith; and brothers-in-law, LeRoy Voshell, Dick Reed, Paul Cornilsen, Ferman Smith, and Duke Ludovissy.
