Philip Olmsted

 

Philip Legrand Olmsted, 78, of Giard, Iowa died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. He was born July 25, 1935, to David and Charlotte (Koether) Olmsted in Giard, Iowa. Philip attended a one-room school in Giard Township, McGregor Elementary and graduated in 1953 from Monona High School. He attended Luther College and graduated from Iowa State University with an engineering degree.

Philip was a Jersey dairy farmer with his father until 1966, worked as a mechanic in McGregor and was employed as an operator at MPC in Prairie du Chien, up until his illness. While at MPC, he was recognized for 25 years of service. He was a board member of the River and Bluffs Antique Car Club, Singles Over Fifty and a board member of the Monona Historical Society. 

Philip was a lifelong member of the Giard Methodist Church. He sang in the church choir and participated in the Living Last Supper sponsored by the Living Faith United Methodist Parish for the past 26 years.

Philip is survived by his sister, Edna Heitmann of Keystone, Iowa and Margaret Moyer of Millmont, Pennsylvania; ten nieces and nephews, who spent many happy hours on the Olmsted Farm with their Uncle Phil, Jean Neely of Branson, Missouri, Mary Welch of Omaha, Nebraska, Neill Heitmann of Norwalk, Iowa, Gale Heitmann of Keystone, Iowa, Alice Ligouri of Des Moines,  Keith Moyer of Middleburg, Pennsylvania, Scott Moyer of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, Dale Moyer of Mattituck, New York, Reed Moyer of Pt. Matilda, Pennsylvania and Ralph Moyer of Millmont, Pennsylvania; five cousins, Kathy Koether of Giard, Gwen Elliot of Topeka, Kansas, Greg Koether of McGregor, Barton Klotzbach of Monona and Barbara Dickson of McGregor and many great-nieces and nephews.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials in Philip’s honor may be directed to the Giard United Methodist Women and the Monona Historical Society.

Visitation was on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Giard, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Giard, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Hopes as the officiant. Burial will follow at Monona Cemetery, Monona, Iowa
