George E. Maier
George E. Maier, 96, of Garber, Iowa, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. George Emil, the son of Emil and Anna Marie (Schaub) Maier was born November 25, 1917, on his family’s farm near Littleport, Iowa. George attended country school, Volga Township # 7. He served with the U.S. Army’s Sixth Division in the South Pacific during World War II. After his return from the war, George farmed the Beck farm near Elkport, Iowa. In 1948, he moved to the Gerloff farm near Garber and farmed until his retirement.
George is survived by his brother, Alvin Maier of Elkport, Iowa; a nephew; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; eight sisters, Alma Gerloff; Viola Maier; Pearl Waterman; Iona Schuety; Florence Ernst; Verda Maier; Grace Maier; and Anna Mae Maier; and two brothers, Marvin and Arthur Maier.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 28, at 1 p.m. at Union Cemetery, rural Littleport. The Rev. Paul Fohs officiated. Military honors were provided by Elkader American Legion Post #106.
