Bernice Marion Whittle, 86, of Elkader, passed away suddenly, Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born November 11, 1927, rural Garnavillo, to Peter and Marion (Thein) Dutka. Bernice attended country school in rural Garnavillo.
Bernice was united in marriage to Bernell J. Whittle on November 7, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Three children were born to this union, Stanley, Dwayne and Beverly. The couple farmed in rural Elkader their entire life. She was a homemaker, decorated cakes for special occasions; and she also enjoyed quilting, growing roses, gardening, crocheting and baking.
Survivors include her children, Stanley (Cheryl) Whittle of Elkader, Bev (and special friend, Joe Doyle) of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Chad (Autumn) Whittle, Christopher (Sarah) Whittle, Amanda (Jackson) Drost, Stacey (Joshua) Hogberg; sister, Gwen Durni of Platteville, WI; sisters-in-law, Ruth Dutka and Darlene Dutka, both of Garnavillo; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Malcolm and Joanne Whittle of Elkader, Norbert and Dorothy Whittle of Glendale, WI, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernell in 2009; her son Dwayne and five brothers, Donald, David, Calvin, Floyd and Elwood Dutka.
A mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader with Rev. Paul R. Peters as celebrant. Music was provided Darlene Dittmer and Ann Franta. Casket bearers were Chad and Chris Whittle, Danny Peck, and Danny, Randy and Kevin Dutka. There was a visitation from 9:30 to 11 Saturday at the church.
