The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association recently recognized Dan Berns of Garnavillo as the recipient of a 2014 IHSADA Sports Media Award.
Dan Berns is a 1987 graduate of Garnavillo High School and a 1988 graduate of Brown Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. He started working at KCTN/KADR in 1986 when he was still in high school. He has been the general manager at KCTN FM/KADR AM in Elkader since 2003, where he is also the news and sports director.
Dan is in his 26th year of broadcasting high school sports. KCTN/KADR broadcasts games for Central-Elkader, Clayton Ridge, Edgewood-Colesburg, MFL MarMac, North Fayette/Valley, Postville and Starmont.
On Fridays during the wrestling season KCTN/KADR hosts a weekly wrestling report program talking with area coaches. The station also hosts a "countdown-to-kick-off" show each week during the football season, where they talk with local football coaches. KCTN/KADR conducts interviews during halftime of football games about other school activities at the host school. The interviews include superintendents, principals, athletic directors, coaches, play and music directors, and booster club presidents.
Dan has had the pleasure of broadcasting several state championship games over the years, including football in 1992 and 1999, baseball in 1992, softball in 2002, and girls' basketball in 2008. He has also broadcast a number of games of former MFL MarMac prep and NBA player Raef LaFrentz. Dan was fortunate to broadcast the girls' game in which Gene Klinge became the all-time winningest coach.
Dan served on the Clayton Ridge School Board for 11 years, including three years as Board president. He has also served on numerous other school and civic committees, and has coached youth football, basketball and soccer.
