Dean Possehl, 66, of Apple Valley, MN, formerly of Elkader, passed away peacefully at his home on March 17, 2014, after a short, but fierce battle with cancer.
Dean Edward Passel was born July 20, 1947 to Ralph and Lenora (Olson) Passel in rural Wagner Township, Clayton County, near Elkader, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children. He attended kindergarten through high school at Central Community Schools in Elkader where he played football and ran track, which he loved, setting a school relay record that held for many years.
On July 18, 1964, Dean married his junior and senior high school sweetheart, Cynthia Warren, in Elkader. Two daughters were born to them, Molly Ann in 1965 and Julie Lynn in 1967. Dean worked for his in-law’s business, Spud’s Super Valu until 1976 when he and Cynthia purchased the business under the name of Dean’s Super Valu. During these years, Dean was an enthusiastic supporter of Elkader and its many organizations. He employed and mentored many young people, many of whom he maintained friendships with throughout his life.
In 1985, Dean’s Super Valu was sold and Dean continued his career in the supermarket industry at Scot Lad Foods in Illinois, Roundy’s in Indiana and AGI in Des Moines. After moving to the Twin Cities in Minnesota in 1997, Dean worked for 99 Cents Only and finished his career with Dollar Tree. He retired July 1, 2013. Dean had a lifelong love of the grocery business and never passed up an opportunity to tour a supermarket he hadn’t been in.
Dean was so proud of his two daughters and could count on one hand the number of their events, concerts, and ballgames he missed during their school years. He felt his greatest achievement in life was watching his girls grow into beautiful, loving, caring women.
Over the years Dean was a member of many organizations: A member and president of the Elkader Jaycees, the Lions Club, Central School Board, member and President of the Central Athletic Boosters, church membership in Elkader, Crown Point, IN, Fairfield, IA and Eagan MN, Elkader Lodge #72, Marshalltown Masonic Organization, El Kahir Shrine and Fairfield IA Rotary Club.
Dean is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Cynthia, daughters Molly (Dave) Moran and Julie (David) Greichunos; grandchildren, Mike, Andrew (Kristin), Tyler (Jill), Tom, Megan, Kate, Ryan, Brandis (significant other, Alex) and Collin; and his great-grandchildren Taylor, Hannah, Parker and Raylan, all of whom were his treasures. He is also survived by brothers Ray (Kay) Possehl, Dennis (Mary) Possehl and Carl (Andrea) Possehl, many nieces, nephews and cousins, friends and his beloved Pugs, Jiggs and Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, great-granddaughter, Madison, sister Karen (Logan) Rentschler, brother Bruce (Marilyn) Possehl, sister Lenora Mae (Merlin) Anderson and niece Lois (Possehl) Keen.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 12 noon at White Funeral Home, Apple Valley. A memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials will be forwarded by family to some of Dean’s favorite charities in lieu of flowers.
