Betty J. Garaghty

Betty Jane Garaghty, 83, of Elkader, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation was before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, March 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, conducted by Rev. Paul R. Peters.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader was in charge of arrangements. 

Betty was born Sept. 8, 1930, in Guttenberg, to Jack and Frances (Wolter) Mahowald. Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Guttenberg.

She was united in marriage to John Garaghty on April 17, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Five children were born to this union. Jane raised her family on the family farm for many years and later moved into Elkader.

Survivors include her children, James Garaghty of Elkader, Peggy (Ronald) Weiland of Dubuque, Sherri (Daniel) Koenig of Dubuque, Patty (Chris) Marcov of Ames and Kevin Garaghty of Elkader; grandchildren, Ben (Carissa) Marcov, Sam Marcov, Justin (Ashley) Weiland, Emily Weiland  (Fiancé Eric Lahr); great-grandson, Zander Weiland and sister, Adele Parker of Guttenberg.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband and a sister, Peppy Mahowald.

The family would like to thank the Drs. and nursing staff at Central Community Hospital in Elkader and University Hospitals and Clinics for the care that Jane received.
