Arthur George Maier
Arthur George Maier, 94, of Elkader, died Monday, February 17, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center. He was born November 1, 1919, near Elkport to Emil and Anna (Schaub) Maier. He attended Volga Twp. #7 School.
Art spent his entire life in the area helping on the home farm, as well as working with area farmers. He enjoyed woodworking, and especially loved his bees. He was the caretaker of the Union Cemetery for nearly 50 years, and also Sacred Heart Cemetery near Littleport for a time. Art kept the fire burning in the Hope Lutheran Church furnace for many years including cutting the wood.
Art is survived by two brothers, Alvin Maier of Elkport and George Maier of Elkader and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and eight sisters.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, with Rev. Lin Reichstadter officiating. Burial followed in Union Cemetery, rural Littleport. Friends called from noon until service time on Saturday at the church. Casket bearers were Verdeen Waterman Jr., Mark Waterman, Lorna Waterman, Bill Scherf, J.P. Zapf and Marvin Dahling. Honorary bearers were Kenneth Fishel and Clair Tschirgi.
