Robert "Bobby" William Connell


Robert “Bobby” William Connell, 79, of Marquette, Iowa, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. 

Robert was born on Jan. 8, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Frank and Elizabeth (Gallagher) Connell. Robert’s father passed away before his birth.

He attended the Marquette School in Marquette, Iowa. Bobby worked for the McGregor Roofing Company for many years. He was a devout member of St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor, Iowa. He was a kind and gentle man who offered help to those in need. This included church bingo and volunteering for the Marquette Action Club Flea Markets. He was well known in downtown Marquette for helping the elderly by picking up mail, mowing grass, snow removal, and other tasks. Robert was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Chicago Cubs, and MFL MarMac Bulldog fan, and followed many other teams. He was proud of the fact that he shared the same birthday as Elvis Presley. He enjoyed being involved in all of the activities at the nursing home and spending time with the residents and staff members. 

Bobby’s wishes were to list Carly and Bryce Matthew as his survivors. He is further survived by his cousins and friend Betty Reynolds and members of the Reynolds – Matthew family.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Connell and his siblings, Cpl. John M. “Mickey” Connell (killed in the Korean War in 1952), Kenneth Connell, Ethel Megonigle and Helen Kreassig; and Dale Reynolds, his employer, mentor, and close friend. 

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 1, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor, Iowa with Rev. Greg Bahl as the Celebrant. Inurnment will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa at a later date.
