Catherine E. Mezera, 88, of Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 12, 1925 in Murdock, Minn. the daughter of Leo and Ruby (Rosemeier) Gerlach. Catherine earned a B.S. degree in elementary education with a minor in history from Platteville State Teacher’s College and later became a middle grade school teacher in the Sheboygan Falls and Sparta Public Schools. She married Clement C. Mezera on Oct. 9, 1952 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman. Together they farmed in rural Prairie du Chien where Catherine enjoyed the dairy cows and doing the farm records and bookwork. Clem preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 2008.
She is survived by her three sons, Cletus, Dennis and Philip (Deanne) all of Prairie du Chien; her three daughters, Barbara Mezera of Union Center, Martha (Alan) Palmer of Boscobel, and Rita (Christopher) Moore of Fennimore; sisters-in-law Ann Gerlach, Mary T. Shedivy, Monica Bay, Phyllis Mezera, Pat Mezera, Beth Scheckel and Sharon Mezera; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Robert and Earl Gerlach and a sister Mary Roach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the St. John’s Endowment Fund.
