The MFL MarMac Bulldog boys knew a win over Starmont on Feb. 10 would clinch the co-championship of the Upper Iowa Conference. That night, a tenacious defense, poor Starmont shooting and a need to get back in the win column at home all combined for the perfect storm, as the Starmont Stars saw stars, falling to the Bulldogs 78-40.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter. They allowed just two points in the second quarter, while scoring 20, giving them a 43-12 halftime lead.

Starmont woke up a bit during the third quarter, scoring 18 points, while giving up 19, but the Bulldogs led by 32 at the quarter’s end.

Needing three points to get to 35, the Bulldogs struck quickly in the fourth quarter, scoring four points. The clock continued to run the rest of the game, and the Bulldogs won by 38.

“Three conference championships feels good,” said head coach Eric Dettbarn after the game. “It is better than second.”

With the win, the Bulldogs moved to 14-5 overall and 10-1 in the conference, tying with Clayton Ridge for first place.

Tristen Kautman led the Bulldogs with 22 points. Cody Mason had 19, leaving him 60 points shy of 1000, at 940 career points. Brandon Schneider also had 10 points, while Adam Greener picked up 10 rebounds.
