The MFL MarMac Bulldog boys ended up on the short side Feb. 8 as the visiting Prairie du Chien Blackhawks pulled out a 63-55 victory.

The Bulldogs started out well, grabbing a 16-9 lead after the first quarter of play on the strength of Austin Schoulte’s eight points. The second quarter was tougher, as the Bulldogs scored just six points to the Blackhawks’ 20.

The Bulldogs counterpunched in the third quarter, scoring 17 points to Prairie’s eight, to lead 39-37. That was thanks, in large part, to back-to-back threes by Cody Mason.

Prairie’s Brett Trautsch hit a three to put the Blackhawks up 40-39 early in the fourth quarter and Prairie never trailed from that point, leading by eight points at two different times late in the game.

The Bulldogs were led by Tristen Kautman, who had 18 points. Mason contributed 15 points, all on threes, and Austin Schoulte had 13.

Prairie was led by Austin Roach with 25 points, Trautsch with 18 and Connor George with 12.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 13-5 overall. They finish the regular season with a home conference game versus Starmont on Monday, Feb. 10. A win would give them a share of the conference championship. The team traveled to Sumner on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and closed out the home schedule on Friday, Feb. 14 with a game against the Decorah Vikings. Tournament play begins Thursday, Feb. 20, at West Union, against either Columbus Catholic or Sumner-Fredericksburg.
