Central girls fall to MFL MarMac
By Pat McTaggart
Because of the inclement weather, the Central girls had only one game last week, playing MFL MarMac. The Warriors fell behind 13-3 in the first quarter and trailed 25-12 at the half. In a fairly evenly matched third quarter, MFL MarMac maintained a 35-21 lead. Central ended up losing the game by a score of 46-30.
Kiana Stender scored eight points and Laren Lenth had six points. Lexi Funk scored five points while Shana Hilgerson chipped in three points. Gabrielle Berns, Kinsey Juergens, Haley Schroeder, and Samantha Tschirgi all had two points apiece.
“We struggled to score early and found ourselves down double digits by half,” Coach Mark Wiley said. “We made a few adjustments in the second quarter that got the game back to five points, but that was as close as we could get. Shooting under 30 percent for the game, we had good shots, but they just didn’t find the bottom of the net.”
Kiana Stender led the team in rebounds with seven. Lexi Funk had five rebounds and Shana Hilgerson grabbed four rebounds during the game.
“As a team we were out rebounded almost two to one and we had an uphill battle from the beginning of the game,” Coach Wiley commented.
Stender also led the team with two steals. Juergens, Hilgerson, and Schroeder each had one steal in the game. Stender had two assists in the game and Lexi Funk had one assist. Kaitlin Orr had an assist as well.
“Our assist and steal totals were low,” Coach Wiley said. “We need to be more aggressive on the defensive end by getting a hand in basing lanes. Offensively we have to continue to get high percentage shots and with a couple of practices this week, hopefully we can build up our confidence to knock down some of these shots.”
