A group of local celebrities will strap on their dance shoesfor a night of uproarious entertainment Thursday, Feb. 6, as Dancing with the River Ridge Stars takes center stage at halftime of the Timberwolf girls’ varsity basketball game against Benton/Shullsburg.
The public is invited to come out and support their favorite VIP from the River Ridge area and also help out the district’s Wellness Committee and high school dance team at the same time, as the second annual Dancing with the River Ridge Stars is a fundraiser for both organizations.
Dancers and the group/business they represent will include Justin Campbell, River Ridge youth football; Becky Marshall, Brenda’s Beauty Bar; Joe Lasko, new band director and elementary/middle school music teacher; Adam Guthrie, varsity wrestling coach; Kristin Collins, alumni member and assistant volleyball coach; Zach Oyen, Bloomington Fire Department; and Kristin Schier, active parent and Grant County Courthouse employee.
Each “celebrity” dancer will be paired with a member of the River Ridge High School dance team, according to Rachele Breuer, an affiliate of the Wellness Committee and one of the fundraiser’s organizers. The two-person teams are participating in two practices prior to the big night. Pairs are expected to be clad in costumes and prepared to bring their own flair to the gymnasium floor.
“It’s nothing formal at all. It’s just a lot of fun,” Breuer said.
Following all the performances, crowd members will be invited to vote for their favorite dancing partners for $1 per vote. Everyone may vote more than once and for more than one couple if they wish.
At the end of the third quarter, the winner of this year’s Dancing with the River Ridge Stars will be announced and crowned by the 2013 champion, Brenda Ertz, owner of Brenda’s Beauty Bar.
Last year, according to PE teacher Stephanie Fencl, Dancing with the River Ridge Stars raised about $950 to be split by the dance team and Wellness Committee, which provides healthy activities for members of the community and River Ridge School District.
Dance team coaches and fellow organizers of the event include teachers Tara Drone and Becky Logemann.
