Eileen Rogers

Eileen Kathryn Rogers, 74, formerly of Mt. Vernon, and a resident of the Great River Care Center, McGregor, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 14, after a long and courageous battle with Lewy Body Disease. Services were held in Mt. Vernon Saturday, Jan. 18.

Eileen was born on April 10, 1939, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm outside of Solon and as a young girl, attended country school in rural Cedar Bluffs. In high school, Eileen was a terrific athlete, especially when it came to basketball. She also loved playing drums in the band. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1957. After high school, she attended Hamilton Business College and upon graduation went on to work for Interstate Finance, Cedar Rapids. In November 1961, she married Richard Rogers and they made their home in Mt. Vernon. Shortly after moving to Mt. Vernon, they purchased Rogers Standard Service, where she worked until 1984. She went on to work at NCS (Pearson), Iowa City, Iowa, until her retirement in 2002.

Eileen was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where she was active in the Ladies Guild and served a number of years as the organization’s president. She was also active in the church’s annual Fall Festival, often organizing various aspects of the festival.

During the school year, while her boys were in school, Eileen never missed a sporting event or music performance. She was very proud of her sons. She was also an active member of the Mt. Vernon School District’s Booster Club and Music Association, and served a number of years as each group’s president.

Eileen is remembered for her sense of humor and her ability to put a smile on anyone’s face. From her expansive and ever-changing flower beds to her vibrant Christmas displays, she was well known for her exquisite flowers and yard. Through and through, she was a true Iowa Hawkeye fan her entire life and especially loved basketball and football.

Eileen is survived by her sons, Kevin Rogers (Matthew Brunscheen) of West Branch, Jeff (Barb) Rogers of Linn Creek, Mo., and Doug (Lisa) Rogers of Prairie du Chien; her siblings Mary Jensen of West Branch and B.J. Leonard of Solon; her grandchildren, Kristin (Steve) Abernathy of Linn Creek, Mo., Logan Rogers of Linn Creek, Mo., and Katie Rogers of Prairie du Chien; and great-grandchildren, Brayden and Sophie Abernathy of Linn Creek, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lavona (Cerney) Leonard, and a sister, Rita Serbousek.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Memorial gifts will be shared with the National Parkinson’s Foundation, the Lewy Body Foundation and the Mt. Vernon School District Foundation.

The family of Eileen would like to extend a sincere heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Great River Care Center. The exceptional care you administered to our mother and sister are deeply appreciated!
