Despite the weather last week, the Central girls were able to get two games in.

On January 13 the girls met North Fayette. Central led 11-2 in the first quarter and had an 18-13 lead at the half. North Fayette came back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 27-26. Each team scored 12 points in the final quarter, giving the Warriors a 39-38 victory.

Central was led in scoring by Kiana Stender with 15 points. Haley Schroeder had 13 points in the game. Samantha Tschirgi had four points. Tara Follon and Kinsey Juergens each scored three points on free throws. Lexi Funk scored one point from the free throw line.

“We did a great job offensively in the first quarter of getting out in transition and getting easy baskets,” Coach Mark Wiley said. “It was tougher to do the same thing after the first quarter. We battled back after being down by four in the fourth quarter. Individuals stepped up and hit some big shots to pull us back ahead with two minutes left in the game. “

Tschirgi led the team with 12 rebounds in the game. Lexi Funk had four rebounds. Shana Hilgerson, Juergens, and Stender each had three rebounds.

“We out-rebounded North Fayette Valley, which gave us a couple more second chance opportunities on the offensive end.”

Juergens led the team with three assists and three steals. Stender grabbed three steals as well with two assists. Haley Schroeder also had three steals in the game. Funk, Hilgerson, and Tschirgi each had one steal in the game. Gabrielle Berns had an assist.

January 17 saw the girls meet Sumner/Fredericksburg. Central fell behind 15-14 in the first quarter and trailed 27-22 at the half. Sumner/Fredericksburg came out strong in the third quarter and took a 41-28 lead.  The Warriors ended up losing the game by a score of 48-30.

Central was led in scoring by Kinsey Juergens with seven points. Gabrielle Berns and Samantha Tschirgi each had six points on the night. Shana Hilgerson had four points. Haley Schroeder scored three points. Lexi Funk and Kiana Stender each had a basket for two points.

“Offensively, we pushed the ball in the first half and scored on transition opportunities,” Coach Wiley said.  “The pace of the game was slower in the second half and we didn’t convert on shots.”

Lexi Funk led the team with six rebounds in the game. Kinsey Juergens grabbed four rebounds. Tschirgi had three points in the game.

“It was our worst output of rebounding this season as a team,” Coach Wiley commented. “Sumner-Fredericksburg doubled us in the rebounding category and scored 16 second chance points. This was a major difference in the game, especially on the defensive end.”

Juergens had four steals in the game. Stender had four assists, all in the first half and had one steal. Schroeder had two assists and a steal. Laren Lenth had one steal.
