Bulldog boys out-battle West Central
By Michael Newton
The Bulldog boys also faced off against West Central Jan. 7, pulling off a 64-48 win. The Bulldogs got out to an early 9-0 lead, then stretched it to 13 before West Central went on a 6-3 run to cut the lead to eight after one quarter, leaving the score at 23-15. With Ethan Steinbronn plugging the middle, West Central stayed around throughout the game. However, Steinbronn and his cohort, Hud Johnston, were no match for Bulldogs Noah Schultz and Tristen Kautman, who were able to fake them enough to get inside baskets. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 11 and then 12 with a minute left in the first half, but West Central scored the last points of the half on a Steinbronn tip in, making the score 38-28 Bulldogs at the half.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs led 41-30 when the Blue Devils made a game of it with 10-0 run to get within one at 41-40. Bulldog coach Eric Dettbarn called a time out and rallied the boys to score a 4-0 finish to lead 45-40 at the end of three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw the Blue Devils get no closer than three points.
The Bulldogs, who moved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference, were led by Cody Mason with 15 points. Austin Schoulte added 15 and Kautman had 12 off the bench. West Central’s Steinbronn led all scorers with 22 points and Johnston had 13. West Central fell to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
