Bernice E. Cathman, 91, of Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.
She was born Oct. 15, 1922 in Lancaster, the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Hoffman) Esser. She married Cletus Cathman on Jan. 17, 1944. Together they farmed in the Glen Haven area until Cletus’ death in October of 1987. Bernice then moved to Prairie du Chien where she became the gardener at the Villa Louis. She loved to garden and had quite the “green thumb.” Bernice was also a great cook and enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter Kay (Dick) Tesar of Prairie du Chien; her grandchildren David (Stephanie), Douglas (Cheryl), Daniel (Shelley) and Darren (Wen-Li) Tesar; along with 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son Gary; an infant brother Frederick; her sister Kathleen Esser and a grandson Kevin.
A Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Jan. 10, at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiated, with burial in the Gockel Cemetery in Glen Haven. The Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien assisted the family.
