Bulldog boys hang on to defeat Waukon
By Michael Newton
After a two-week layoff, the MFL MarMac Bulldog boys hosted the Waukon Indians Jan. 2 and hung on for a 64-59 victory. Waukon won the opening tip off, but the Bulldogs scored the first points, as Noah Schultz stole the ball and Brandon Schneider tipped in the missed lay-up for a 2-0 lead. Parker Hesse put Waukon on top at 3-2. The teams then exchanged the lead, with the Indians leading 11-10 late in the quarter. The Bulldogs were in danger of being behind at the end of the first quarter for the first time this season, but they went on a 5-0 run to lead 15-11 after one quarter.
The Bulldogs spread the wealth around, as five different Bulldogs made points in the second quarter. Waukon stayed in the game as Jacob Ronan and Hesse scored 18 of the 24 Indian first half points. The half ended after a nifty move down the lane by Cody Mason to make it 30-24 Bulldogs.
Waukon slowly chipped away at the Bulldog lead and tied the game at 40 with 2:38 left in the third quarter. However, the Bulldogs battled back with an 11-0 run to open up a 51-40 lead, which Waukon chipped to 51-44. Seven combined possessions resulted in no points before Tristen Kautman scored for the Bulldogs. Mason then gave the Bulldogs an 11-point lead, which proved to be insurmountable.
The leading scorers were Waukon’s Ronan with 22 points and Hesse with 21 points and 14 rebounds. MFL MarMac was led by Kautman, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Austin Schoulte added 11, while Mason finished with 10.
With the victory, the Bulldogs went to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Waukon fell to 4-3 overall.
