Merry Christmas Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter
Thanks to a very generous donation from Steve and Lynda Welter of Prairie du Chien, Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter (RABAS) volunteers will have a very Merry Christmas.
What started as a small group of citizens concerned about the need for an animal shelter and organized by Dr. Jami Quick in July of 2007, this volunteer group has grown into a force to be reckoned with. Monthly meetings, perpetual fundraising, therapy dog teams, community events and finding forever homes for pets in need even without a physical shelter have become second nature for this small but hard-working and committed group.
On Friday, Dec. 20, the first step toward RABAS’ goal of an animal shelter for the Prairie du Chien area became reality. Steve and Lynda Welter also recognized the need for an animal shelter and have donated two acres of land for the shelter. The future home of Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter is located at the southwest corner of Campion Boulevard and the new 22nd Street. The necessary paperwork was finalized on Friday by Attorney Tom Peterson.
According to Randy Paske, president of RABAS, this first step toward an animal shelter is by far the most exciting news this non-profit group has had in a number of years. With Phase One (land acquisition) now complete, the group will continue to raise funds, visit other shelters and enter Phase Two—building design and construction. Don Iverson, of Iverson Construction, has offered to be the project manager.
RABAS Treasurer Jill Cipra said, “We are very thankful for this donation. We realize that we still have a long way to go before we will be able to help more pets in need. But this is such a great way to start the New Year.”
