Central girls lose close game
By Pat McTaggart
On December 17, the Central girls went up against Turkey Valley. Central kept up with Turkey Valley in the first quarter, with each team scoring 15 points. In second quarter action, the Warriors were only able to score two points, giving Turkey Valley a 22-17 lead at the half. Central was out-scored 6-5 in the third quarter and had a 28-22 deficit with a quarter left. The girls out-scored Turkey Valley in the fourth quarter, but lost the game by a score of 37-33.
Central was led in scoring by Kiana Stender with 15 points. Kinsey Juergens was second in scoring with 12 points. Samantha Tschirgi had four points and Haley Schroeder had two points.
“We need to get more production from players on the offensive end, Coach Mark Wiley said. “I think three or four players looked to score, but we all need to be willing to penetrate against a zone and play an active role on both ends of the court.”
Samantha Tschirgi led the team with 11 rebounds. Lexi Funk pulled down eight rebounds in the game. Kiana Stender grabbed four rebounds in the game.
“This is a major area of concern for us at this point in the season,” Coach Wiley said. “We were even in the rebounding category, but allowed for 11 offensive rebounds. It is tough to win when you give up second chance opportunities.”
Kinsey Juergens had five assists on the night and blocked a shot in the second quarter as well. Funk, Stender, and Shana Hilgerson each had an assist. Hilgerson also had Central’s only steal on the night.
“This is another area of concern with our lack of aggressive play on the defensive end,” Coach Wiley commented. “We need to get into passing lanes and disrupt the other team’s offensive flow.”
