Anita Rose Kenneally Cowie of Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Elkader, died Saturday afternoon, December 7, 2013, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.
Anita was born on the family farm in Lodomillo Township, Clayton County, on January 13, 1917. Her parents were Adeline Viola Dillon and David Edward Kenneally. She attended the Henry School in Lodomillo, Elkader High School and Iowa State Teacher’s College. She taught country school as a normal training teacher prior to entering ISTC. After ISTC, she taught at Hartford and Tipton, IA.
In 1943, she married John A. Cowie. Six children were born to this union; Charles of Madison, WI, Elaine (Patrick) Maney of Boston, MA, Cathy (Tom) Adkins of San Jose, CA, Colette (Jerry) Horn of Bel Air, MD, Martin (Debbie) of Oshkosh, WI, and Michael of Prairie du Chien, WI.
Between 1949 and 1960, she lived in Elkader, and assisted John in his photography business there. In 1960, John and Anita moved to Prairie du Chien, WI, and Anita began teaching math in the West Grant County High School south of Prairie du Chien. While teaching at West Grant, she obtained a master’s degree in math education from University of Wisconsin Platteville. Later, she taught in the public school in Garnavillo, and in the prison in Green Bay, WI. She also worked in the Crawford County, WI, Department of Social Services.
After retiring, Anita taught math as a volunteer with the Crawford County Literacy Council in Prairie du Chien. She was proud of her success in preparing students there for the high school graduate equivalency test (GED). She taught there until the age of 92.
Her other interests included traveling, reading, gardening, family history research, the retired teacher organization and volunteering at the Villa Louis Museum.
Anita is survived by her six children; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and her sister, IvaNell Dinan.
Anita was preceded in death by her husband parents, brothers Thomas, Joe, Leo, Edward and Gary and sisters Marguerite (Charlie) Neylan and Kathryn (Stephen) Leonard.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
A Mass of Christian burial; was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader with Rev. Paul R. Peters as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph cemetery. Casket bearers were Kevin Maney, Bret Cowie, Craig Cowie, Dashielle Horn and Meghan Horn. Darlene Dittmer was organist and Kevin Lau, soloist.
A luncheon will follow the burial at St. Joseph Parish Hall, Elkader.
