With no more CJ Mason, Bulldogs enter new era

By Michael Newton

With five returning players from last year’s fourth place team, the MFL MarMac Bulldogs will go into the season with ten new players on the varsity squad. Returning will be Cody Mason, Sam Pfeiffer, Brandon Schneider, Noah Schultz and Landon Schultz. Newcomers include juniors DJ Ammons, Austin Schoulte, Andrew Zeeh and Adam Greener, as well as freshman Tristen Kautman.

This team will be pressed again by Sumner-Fred, who is leaving the conference after this year. Clayton Ridge, West Central and Postville are looking good as well. New conference foes Ed-Co and Starmont will also present new challenges, but the Bulldogs should be able to win 19 or more games and, depending on the district setup, could make another deep run into the state tournament.

Tight Upper Iowa Conference awaits Bulldog Girls

By Michael Newton

The 2013-14 MFL MarMac Girls Basketball season will be one of challenges every game. Coach Jason Halverson said everyone will be tough this season, including newcomers to the conference, Starmont and Edgewood-Colesburg.

The only change to the starting lineup will be the insertion of Haley Vogt in place of Chanice Drahn, who has graduated. Vogt joins Marcy Klein, Lexi Dettbarn, Erin Kinley and Madelyn Vogt in the starting five. Jillian Haberichter will come in off the bench, along with Briana Berger, Jasmine Stocker, Allison Thurn and Chaun’te Drahn.

This team will be challenged height wise and will have to hit three-point baskets to stay in games. Look for a 14-win season out of this version of the Bulldogs.

Wrestlers’ first home match is Dec. 5

By Michael Newton

This year’s wrestling team is sorting itself out and Coaches Chet Bachman and Tracy Decker have yet to determine who will wrestle at what weights.

Nathan Howe is the lone senior and the team’s captain. He will wrestle at one of the heavier weights, as will Gatlin Keehner and David Martin. Kordell DuCharme is out until January with a broken collarbone.

The first home match is Thursday, Dec. 5 against Clayton Ridge, DeSoto, Wis., and Waukon. It starts at 6 p.m. in the main gym.
