Bulldog Girls fall 50-42 to Sumner-Fred in opener

The MFL MarMac Bulldog Girls Basketball Team started their game on Nov. 26 fast, going on a 7-0 run after the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars scored first. Haley Vogt led the charge in the first quarter with eight points, as the girls got out to an 18-10 lead with 90 seconds to go in the quarter—their biggest lead of the quarter. The quarter ended 18-12 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs held the lead for most of the second quarter, leading 25-16 at one point. Sumner-Fred then laid a 10-0 run on the Bulldogs to take the lead for good with 90 seconds left in the half. The half ended with Sumner-Fred leading 30-26.
Neither team could score coming out of the break, going about three minutes without scoring. The Bulldogs got things started with Lexi Dettbarn, who hit a three pointer. The Bulldogs scored twelve points in the quarter to the Cougars’ nine. The Bulldogs used three Dettbarn threes and a Chaun’te Drahn three to get to within one at 39-38.
The fourth quarter was a tale of turnovers and missed chances on the free throw line, as the team went 0-6 from the stripe. The Cougars shut down the Bulldogs, as they scored 11 points to salt the game away 50-42.
Lexi Dettbarn led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Haley Vogt added 11. Maya Marshall led the Cougars with 12 points.
The win put Sumner-Fred to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Bulldogs are 0-1 in both. The girls travel to Elkader on Friday, Dec. 6 to play the Warriors. The home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 10 will be against Ed-Co.
