Eldon R. Swisher
Eldon R. Swisher, 88, of Garnavillo, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.
Visitation was Friday, Nov. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.
Interment was at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Garnavillo.
Eldon was born on Sept. 13, 1925, in Manchester, to Carl and Grace (Nicholes) Swisher.
Eldon graduated from the Colesburg High School. On July 20, 1948, Eldon was united in marriage with Shirley Weber at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. This union blessed them with two children, Susan and Jeffrey. In 1957, Eldon started Ace Home Builders and spent much of his life building homes in the Garnavillo area which he truly enjoyed. One can travel through the streets of Garnavillo and see many of the homes that can be credited to Eldon’s skills and talents. All the while living in Garnavillo, Eldon was an active member of the community. He was a city councilman for 12 years and served as mayor for 27 years. Eldon was a member of the Garnavillo Fire Department, Booster Club, Lions Club and Church Council.
Those left to cherish Eldon’s memory are his wife of 65 years, Shirley; two children, Susan (Dennis) Troester of Dubuque and Jeff (Chris) Swisher of Wheaton, Ill.; three grandchildren, Stacia (Rob) Gillam of Anchorage, Alaska, Timothy (Amanda) Troester of Portland, Ore., Angela (Jim) Fanelli of Wheaton, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas, Noah, Caleb and Geno; one sister-in-law, Anita Swisher and many other relatives and friends.
Eldon was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings, Gerald and Phydalis.
