Central girls win basketball opener
The Central girls’ varsity basketball team came out on top Friday as it played its opening season game against East Buchanan. Central led 13-12 at the end of a close first quarter but fell behind 26-19 at the half. The Warriors still trailed 33-29 with a quarter to go. In fourth quarter action, Central outscored East Buchanan 15-6, taking home the 44-39 victory.
Central was led in scoring by Kiana Stender with 15 points. Haley Schroeder scored 12 points in the win. Kinsey Juergens had eight points. Lexi Funk was good on three field goals for six points. Tara Follon rounded out the scoring with three points.
Samantha Tschirgi led the team with 12 rebounds in the game. Kinsey Juergens had six rebounds. Lexi Funk grabbed four rebounds.
“Team defense struggled in the first half,” Coach Mark Wiley said. “We did a much better job in the second half, including our ability to rebound. We only totaled three steals on the night, so this shows we need to be better positioned on defense. We also gave up second chance points in the second quarter, which allowed East Buchanan to outscore us by eight in that quarter.”
Kinsey Juergens led the team with seven assists. Kiana Stender and Samantha Tschirgi had two assists a piece and Emily Asche delivered one assist as well.
“I was happy with our distribution of the basketball around the perimeter,” Coach Wiley said. “We need to do a better job of getting our post players more actively involved. We kept our turnover total at 15, but we had some unforced turnovers that limited our chances on the offensive end. It was great to see the team battle back after being down in the fourth quarter. We made our free throws down the stretch, rebounded well, and contested East Buchanan shots in the second half to pull out a close win.”
The girls also played in a jamboree November 19 at MFL MarMac. Teams played two quarters; Central won both of their quarters of play.
The girls played Tuesday, November 26, at Oelwein. Results of that game will be carried in the December 4 edition of the Register.
