John E. “Jack” Rettig, 93, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Chicago passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.
He was born Sept. 8, 1920 in Highwood, Ill. the son of Peter and Pearl (Garrity) Rettig. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Elizabeth Coleman on April 21, 1945 at Holy Cross Parish in Deerfield, Ill. He owned and operated Rettig Rug and Furniture Cleaning on the North shore of Chicago for 45 years. Jack liked to bowl, play ping pong and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Bette Rettig of Prairie du Chien; his daughter Jennifer (Joe) Campe of Palatine, Ill.; his sons, Neil (Laura) of Prairie du Chien, Joel (Debbie) of Pine River, and Jon of McGregor, Iowa; a brother Roy of Lubbock, Texas; three grandchildren, Justin, Kristin and Brian along with six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Steve; a brother Peter and sisters; Rita and June Rettig.
Funeral services will be held graveside on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien, with Rev. James Weighner officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
