Haydn Street railroad crossing will likely close

The Haydn Street railroad crossing in Prairie du Chien will likely close no later than Jan. 15, 2014. The Office of the Commissioner of Railroads handed down this proposed order last Wednesday, Oct. 9, five and a half months after public hearings were held on the matter. There is a 15-day window for written comments to be filed with the railroad commissioner before a final ruling is issued.

“I am disappointed with the decision, which seems to fly in the face of the public opinion of residents, business owners and the common council,” City Administrator Aaron Kramer said. “I am also disappointed in the hearing examiner’s decision to recommend closure come before the Marquette Road project is complete.
