10-16 MFL MarMac Volleyball highlights

Oct. 8 vs. Turkey Valley
The MFL MarMac Volleyball team traveled to Jackson Junction to compete against the Turkey Valley Trojans on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Trojans were too. winning 25-5, 25-9 and 25-3.
The Bulldog highlights included seven digs from Briana Berger and Lexi Dettbarn and five from Autumn Meine and Alison Thurn. Dettbarn managed one ace serving.
Turkey Valley’s Taylor Novotny was the star of game with four kills and six aces.
With the loss, the Bulldogs’ overall record dropped to 0-20 and to 0-7 in the conference. Turkey Valley went to 15-10 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Oct. 10 vs. West Central
The MFL Marmac Volleyball team had its senior/parents night on Thursday, Oct. 10. This was the last home game for Briana Berger, Autumn Meine and Nattalee Heins. The opponent was the West Central Blue Devils from Maynard.
The Bulldogs entered the game fired up by a junior varsity win in the earlier match. The Bulldogs raced out to leads of 3-1, 6-1 and 8-2 in the first set before the Blue Devils started to regroup. The Blue Devils got as close as 10-6 before the Bulldogs grabbed their second six-point lead, bringing the score to 12-6. After that, the Blue Devils chipped away at the Bulldogs, getting within one point twice at 15-14 and 16-15. The Bulldogs managed to get back out in front by four at 20-16, but West Central then slowly crawled back to a 21 all score, and then 22 all, when they finally managed to pull ahead 23-22. The Bulldogs forced a deuce situation at 23 all before falling 25-23.
The second set was as close as a 4-3 Blue Devil lead before they reeled off five points to lead 9-4. They eventually bested the Bulldogs 25-13.
The third set was tied at five all when the Blue Devils went on an eight-point run. However, the Bulldog lineup of four sophomores and two juniors wouldn’t stay down, whittling the lead from 13-5 to 14-12. The Bulldogs fell behind 20-16, but got as close as 23-22 before West Central won 25-22.
Team leaders for the game were Jillian Haberichter with six kills, Briana Berger with 10 assists and Alison Thurn with 10 digs. The girls were 49-60 serving, a rate of 81 percent.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-8 in conference and 0-21 overall. West Central is 2-6 in the conference and 5-16 overall.
The Bulldogs will finish the regular season at Guttenberg on Tuesday, Oct. 15. On Thursday they will play in the Upper Iowa Conference tournament at a time to be announced.
The team’s next action after that will be Tuesday, Oct. 29 in Sumner in the second round of the state tournament districts against the winner of South Winneshiek versus Sumner-Fredericksburg.
