Douglas Arthur Carl Buckman

 

Douglas Arthur Carl Buckman, 54, of Sugarland, Texas, and former of Garnavillo, died September 21, 2013. He was born April 13, 1959, in Prairie du Chien, WI to Don and Donna (Robinson) Buckman. During his younger years, he played baseball and golfed. Douglas lived in Garnavillo through high school, where he ran cross-country and was on the track team. He graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1977. He then attended Iowa State University, from 1977-1981, and graduated from ISU with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Douglas lived in Abilene, TX from January 1, 1982, until November 11, 1991, and worked for Tippett & Co. He then worked for Destec Engineering from November 1991, until May 6, 1993. He was happy to close on a house in Sugarland, TX on May 6, 1993. Douglas worked for Dynegy in 1993, or after, and before 1996, Air Liquide February 26, 1996 until July, 2008, when he retired. He liked to work hard and had a plan for success. Douglas engineered many projects and retired in July 2008.

Douglas enjoyed hiking, skiing, camping, climbing the 14,000-foot mountains of Colorado, the U.S. National Parks, gardening, being his own handyman, gambling on occasion with friends, and in recent years attending sporting events in Houston. He enjoyed planning vacations and always picked good trails and spots to see the very best. Douglas hiked to the very bottom of the Grand Canyon and back out at least once, and hiked to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. He always enjoyed the CA, UT, CO, MT, MN national parks and travelled to them many times. He skied many mountains in the US (CO, MN, UT, NV, CA, MT, IA, IL, WI) and Canada. In all, more than 25 ski resorts.

His most recent trip was a family vacation to Hawaii from June 20 to July 4th; hiking, with one six-mile hike, taking lots of great pictures like he always did. He also did his first helicopter ride flying over the volcano on the Big Island, HI.

Survivors include his parents, Don and Donna Buckman of Klemme, IA; two brothers, Darren (Gayla) Buckman of Plano, TX and Dirk (Melissa) Buckman of Garnavillo; five nieces, Heather (Vaughn) Tolbert, Stephanie Buckman, Maddison Buckman, Brenna Buckman, Ella Buckman; uncle Jim (Sandy) Robinson of Denver, CO, two aunts, Janet Hronik of Woodland Park, CO and Eileen Walz of Monona and many friends.

Douglas was preceded in death by his grandparents, Arthur and Frances Buckman and Carl and Verna Robinson.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, where a visitation was held Friday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment was at Garnavillo City Cemetery, Garnavillo.
