Teen gets out before train strikes car

A Bagley teen safely escaped a vehicle that was stuck on the railroad tracks just before it was hit by a train Sunday, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department

On Sept. 15, the sheriff’s department was notified of a train versus car crash located near Highway 35 and Lakeshore Drive in Prairie du Chien Township. Justin J. Mezera, 16, Bagley, was operating a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier and had turned into a private driveway located at 31558 Lakeshore Drive.

Mezera was attempting to leave the private driveway and his vehicle became stuck in between the sets of railway tracks. The vehicle was unable to be moved and Mezera got away from the vehicle before a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Train struck the rear end. The train stopped several hundred yards down from the scene of the crash and then contacted the sheriff’s department.

Mezera’s vehicle was a total loss and the train suffered minor damage. BSNF was held up for several hours before the vehicle could be removed.

Mezera was medically cleared by Tri-State Ambulance and released to a responsibly party.

Also assisting the scene was the Bridgeport Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance Service, Bob’s Towing and Repair, BNSF Railway and Inspectors and the Prairie du Chien Police Department.
